GET TO KNOW SIRUTHULI
The genesis of a people’s movement
Coimbatore was once blessed with abundant water and a cool, pleasant climate. By the early 2000s, however, the picture had changed dramatically. The Noyyal River had run dry, the tanks stood empty, and the water table had plunged to alarming depths. As early as 1980, a UNDP study had cautioned against the rapid depletion of groundwater, a warning that went largely unheeded until, before we realised it, we were facing one of the harshest droughts in our city’s history.
In response, a group of caring citizens and businesses came together with a shared hope, and Siruthuli was born. Meaning “a small drop of water,” Siruthuli stands as a reminder that even the smallest persistent effort, can create a wave of change. Since then, we have worked hand in hand with our community to restore nature’s balance.
