Noyyal River Study: Mapping Pollution for Long-Term River Restoration
Project Details
The River Noyyal, once the lifeline of Coimbatore, has over time been subjected to increasing pollution pressures, primarily from untreated sewage inflows. Recognising the need for a scientific, data-driven foundation for river restoration, Siruthuli undertook a comprehensive Noyyal River Study in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB).
The study focused on identifying, mapping, and measuring sewage inlet points along a critical stretch of the river, dividing it into three segments from Sadivayal to Somanur. Each discharge point was documented and assessed to understand pollution load patterns and their cumulative impact on river health.
This baseline study is a crucial step towards informed action. By clearly identifying pollution sources and volumes, the findings will guide future interventions such as sewage diversion, treatment planning, and phased river rejuvenation efforts.
The Noyyal River Study lays the groundwork for long-term, sustainable river restoration, ensuring that future investments and interventions are targeted, effective, and rooted in scientific evidence.
