2024

The project has transformed Vellakinar South Solai Pond into a healthier water body, improving the quality of life for nearby residents and providing a sustainable model for restoring urban ponds.

Project Details

The Vellakinar South Solai Pond in Coimbatore’s Ward 14 was facing severe deterioration due to years of neglect. The pond—divided into two sections (Pond A and Pond B)—was choked with overgrown weeds and sludge, while untreated sewage (0.8 million litres/day) entered the pond, contaminating both the water and the surrounding groundwater. Siruthuli’s intervention followed a systematic approach: 1️ Dewatering the ponds for safe access 2️ Manual and mechanical clearing of thick vegetation and solid waste 3️ Desilting the accumulated sludge, with part of the sludge used to strengthen the bunds and improve nearby soil 4️ Bioremediation treatment to enhance water quality and reduce harmful bacteria.
