Project Details

Nestled at the foothills of Maruthamalai, Anna University’s regional campus in Coimbatore is home to Kalam Vanam, a heartfelt tribute to former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, who championed ecological restoration. Initiated by Siruthuli on July 27th, 2016, to honor Dr. Kalam’s enduring legacy, the project saw the planting of 5000 saplings using the Miyawaki technique in the first phase, followed by a remarkable green drive on his 80th birthday, when 80,000 trees were planted. The fast-growing forest has flourished, attracting birds, bees, butterflies, and bats, symbolising the revival of ecological balance. The forest includes a banyan tree planted by Padmashree awardee Salumarada Thimakka, who was deeply moved by the sight of the thriving greenery. A man-made percolation pond with a capacity of 70 lakh litres has significantly enhanced the groundwater table, reinforcing the campus’s sustainable ecosystem. The project stands as a testament to Dr. Kalam’s vision of a green and harmonious future.
