Noyyal Yatra
Project Details
The Noyyal Yatra was a landmark public awareness movement that brought the people of Coimbatore together for the restoration of the Noyyal River. Organised by Siruthuli in 2005, the Yatra brought together citizens, students, schools and colleges, farmers, corporates, community groups and environmental supporters to reconnect with the river and understand its importance to the region.
The journey highlighted the Noyyal's ecological significance, its declining health and the urgent need to protect the interconnected system of streams, tanks and water bodies that sustain the river basin.
With more than one lakh people participating, the Noyyal Yatra became a powerful expression of collective concern and public ownership of the river. It demonstrated that restoring a river is not only an environmental effort, but a movement that calls for the participation of an entire community. The Noyyal Yatra remains one of Siruthuli's defining examples of how awareness can become collective environmental action. What are the Benefits?
