Periyakulam
Project Details
Periyakulam, a 320-acre water body in the heart of Coimbatore, was revived through a massive community-driven effort led by Siruthuli. The Thoor Vaarum Thiruvizha (Desilting Festival) brought together people from all walks of life: children, students, police personnel, NCC cadets, and local residents joining hands every Sunday for six weeks to bring the lake back to life.
Supported by Vijayalakshmi Charitable Trust, the project involved desilting the tank, creating three islands for plantations, and strengthening the bund. Heavy machinery worked alongside thousands of volunteers.
The restoration increased the storage capacity to 70 mcft, boosting groundwater levels and creating a thriving ecosystem. Soon after, rains filled the tank, and birds returned, a heartwarming sign of nature’s revival and the power of collective action.
