Kallukadai Medu
Project Details
At Pugalur, a 20+ acre parcel of land under the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) Department held untapped potential. Natural seepage from the Lower Bhavani Sagar canal had been entering this site, but without a storage mechanism, the water was going unutilised. Recognising the opportunity, Siruthuli, with the support of AMM Foundation and EID Parry, transformed five acres of the land into a functional water body.
The project harnesses the natural flow and seepage, converting it into a water source that now recharges groundwater and supports the surrounding ecosystem. To ensure continuity in the hydrological cycle, a surplus weir was constructed, allowing excess water to flow seamlessly into the downstream Chinna Veerasangili Lake. This intervention supports the traditional cascading lake system, enabling better distribution and utilisation of water resources.
The impact has been significant: surrounding areas have already shown improvement in groundwater levels, and the revival of this once-neglected terrain has created a ripple effect benefiting agriculture, biodiversity, and water resilience.
What are the Benefits?
- Improved groundwater levels in surrounding areas
- Effective utilisation of seepage from Lower Bhavani Sagar
- Support to downstream lakes
