Ukkulam
Project Details
Located in Ikkarai Boluvampatti Village Panchayat, Ukkulam had suffered years of neglect, with over 50% of the tank choked by invasive water plants and silt. The sluice, surplus weir, and stone pitching were in disrepair, and the northern foreshore lacked a proper bund. Despite being fed by the Neeli Channel originating from the eastern slopes of the Vellingiri Hills, poor infrastructure had rendered the tank ineffective in storing and distributing water. In 2020, Siruthuli, with the generous support of Messer Cutting Systems, contributions from the Semmedu Ukkulam Farmer Welfare Association, and Rajasthani Sangh, undertook the comprehensive restoration of the tank.
The rejuvenated tank has significantly recharged the groundwater table, revitalised wells, and enriched farmlands with the removed silt. The restored waterbody now supports year-round agriculture and has become a haven for local flora and migratory birds demonstrating the far-reaching ecological and community impact of thoughtful water restoration.
