Increased storage capacity by 3.2 million litres, Strengthened bunds, and Restored water flow through cleaned inlets and outlets

Project Details

In 2019, Siruthuli, with the support of the Rotary Club of Coimbatore, undertook the desilting and rejuvenation of Aravalli Kuttai, a traditional waterbody in Nallur Vayal, Madwarayapuram. The effort involved clearing invasive vegetation, deepening the water spread area, and strengthening the bunds using the excavated earth. The removed silt also benefited local farmers who used it to enrich their fields. To meet the specific needs of the local community, three pipes were laid, two inlets and one outlet, replacing earlier proposed masonry structures. Additionally, a 20-metre stretch of the inlet channel was widened to improve water flow. The beneficiaries themselves were involved in the sluice work. With the restored waterbody now serving multiple uses, from recharging groundwater to supporting livestock and agriculture, Aravalli Kuttai stands as a model of participatory restoration and long-term sustainability. Observation wells have been marked to monitor the impact on groundwater levels in the region.
